Listen to beautiful music against the backdrop of scenic Kent Lake when the Michigan Philharmonic performs “An American Salute,” a free, family-friendly concert on Maple Beach at Kensington Metropark  near Milford/Brighton on Friday, June 22 at 8 pm.

Under the direction of Music Director and Conductor Nan Washburn, the Michigan Philharmonic celebrates our nation’s birthday with a feast of patriotic pops favorites showcasing popular American composers and the traditional classic, Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. Opening with the Star-Spangled Banner, the program continues with Morton Gould’s American Salute, based on “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” selections from Richard Rodgers’ epic World War II musical “South Pacific,” a medley of Cole Porter’s best songs and the Bugler’s Holiday by Leroy Anderson showcasing the talents of the Philharmonic’s trumpet section. Movie music will be featured prominently with ragtime master Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer from “The Sting,” An American Symphony from Michael Kamen’s score to “Mr. Holland’s Opus” and Superman Returns by film composers John Williams and John Ottman. Rounding out the program will be a medley of patriotic songs Yankee Doodle, Yankee Doodle Boy, You're a Grand Old Flag, This Land is Your Land, and God Bless the U.S.A, along with two John Phillip Sousa marches, Liberty Bell March (also the theme to the Monte Python television show)and Stars and Stripes Forever March. The big brass, cannons and church bells of Tchaikovsky’s spectacular 1812 Overture provide a sensational grand finale to this not-to-be-missed summer concert.
