FREE Lifeguard Certification Courses for Metroparks Job Applicants
Metroparks Lifeguards can be certified for free, earn $14.75 an hour AND are eligible to receive the summer bonus of up to $1,680.
The Huron-Clinton Metroparks are excited to announce TWO ways to become a certified Lifeguard for FREE! One is through a partnership with several Metro-Detroit YMCA’s, that will allow those who apply for a lifeguard position at the Metroparks and meet the minimum qualifications, to join a certification course for FREE! The other is to become certified directly through the Metroparks for FREE.
How do you do it?
- Apply for a lifeguarding position on the Metroparks website.
- Complete a preliminary interview with Metroparks staff.
- Metroparks staff will discuss the options for becoming certified for FREE! Depending on the pool you want to work at, you will have the option to complete a Lifeguard Certification course or a Shallow Water Lifeguard Certification course.
- Metroparks staff will provide instructions on how to register for your chosen certification course for free.
Lifeguard Certification courses start as early as March at partnered indoor YMCA locations.

There are 3 upcoming FREE Shallow Water Lifeguard certification courses being offered in Metroparks pool locations:
- May 4, 11, 12 | 9 am – 5 pm (weekends)
- May 8, 9, 10 | 9 am – 5 pm (weekdays)
- June 1, 2, 8 | 9 am – 5 pm (weekends)
* To be a Metroparks Lifeguard you must be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of your chosen certification course AND Be able to successfully complete two swimming skills evaluations on the first day of certification class, which includes swimming, treading water and retrieving a 10 lb. object from a depth of water without the use of goggles.
